I'm glad Shane is part of this conversation, all mouth and no understanding lets you know what the people that actually do the work have to put up with.
I was originally asked to make a t design for the rodeo. I was told it had to look like the last years shirt but with a different date. I did six different designs as I'm not good at following instructions, and was immediately told I couldn't use the word 'gringo' on the shirt. Then the guy that asked me to do the design and told me I couldn't use the word Gringo on the shirt came to my door and told me he wasn't going to do the rodeo anymore. The rodeo was kaput. He wasn't going to do it and no one else could. It just wasn't going to happen. Two days after that two lovely ladies came to my door and asked me if I'd do a t shirt design for the rodeo. They'd decided to take on the responsibility. I showed them my designs and they liked them and had no complaints with my using the word 'gringo'. I had sold some paintings and had some folding cash in my pocket so I suggested we get a group of folks to be sponsors. We decided on 250.us as a chunk we could afford. It was tougher than I'd thought. Asking people for money was never my forte but we managed to get 12 people to kick in. 12 people on a rodeo committee you'd think we'd never agree on anything but we did. Then the original guy that didn't want to do it anymore decided he would just advise us on what we could and couldn't do. Use the word gringo on the shirt was # one. Therein started our problems. He went around telling people we were disrespecting our Mexican hosts by using the word on the t's. Insinuating that we'd kicked him out of the committee when he didn't buy in nor even hand over cash he told us he had on hand left over from the previous year. He started telling us the gringo community wasn't going to buy our shirts because we used the G word. Some people didn't.
We sold a couple thousand dollars worth of that shirt and had a lovely party and money left over for the next year. The controversy wouldn't end there though, we'd created a us vs them atmosphere over the word Gringo. Some Canadians were saying "we're not Gringos". And stuff like that.
Shane, who hasn't been here for years and hasn't contributed a penny to our efforts is the epitome of why we don't want to do it anymore. Put him on the advisory committee. You bet. I no longer wonder why Chino busted a beer bottle over that thick tumor that grows between his ears. My friends have asked me to stay out of this little pie fight but i'd just like everyone to know what the problem is.
George will say I'm patting myself on the back so let me pat myself on the back. I'm a professional artist that donated his time and design to the effort, I drove back and forth to the printer 20 times or more and.... Bought a ticket to the rodeo and two t shirts. I got 0.0 dollars for my efforts as did everyone on the committee. We kept books, unlike the previous 30 years. There will soon be another thread with rodeo information, not this stuff.
