Solomon and Nansee are presenting an Absolute Beginner's Tango Workshop in preparation for the advanced tango workshops of Michael and Beatrix. In years past, attendees of those workshops have often brought friends along who wished they could join in the dancing, but didn't have prior tango knowledge. This is our solution, and it's open to everyone who wants to join. No experience necessary!

The workshop is three days, January 12, 13, & 14, from 11am to 1pm. During this time you will learn the basic fundamentals of Argentine tango. We'll get you dancing so that you can enjoy the upcoming milongas (formal dances) and practicas (informal dances) we'll be having frequently throughout the advanced seminars. The advanced seminars run from mid-Jan through mid-Feb, and have a few slots still open at the moment.

It is ideal if you can bring a partner. Gender doesn't matter; we don't care if you want to dance with your best friend, your spouse, or your buddy. Tango can be very playful, and not necessarily sexual. If you don't have a partner we will do our best to work something out. You will likely be able to dance with many other people over the next several weeks.

Let us illustrate our teaching style with a short story. There once was a veterinarian who worked at a zoo, and she had just performed open-heart surgery on the zoo's prize gorilla. The surgery went extremely well, but now the vet had a new problem - how to keep the gorilla from chewing open the stitches on his chest! Ultimately, she came up with a very good solution.

She put a cast on the gorilla's left leg. The gorilla woke up, looked around, saw the cast, and spent the next few weeks chewing, picking, and worrying at it. The plan worked perfectly. He completely failed to notice the stitches in his chest.

Our aim is to make learning as fun and as easy as possible. We use stories, mirroring, games, play, and even chocolate in our teaching.

What we avoid as much as possible is boring repetition, "teaching you to walk," and hyper-focus on little things at the edge of awareness. That's hard work, and too much focus on those things are what makes people say that learning tango is hard. When you need to learn those sorts of skills, we teach them in other ways. We use methods that engage your interest and focus your attention somewhere that's possible to sustain.

In other words, we put a cast on the gorilla!
