floor tile referral ?

Please tell me the name of your favorite tile setter. After about 5 years our beautiful tile on the roof (under palapa) is coming apart. It started with sounding hollow and coming loose. This year it is buckling up and popping off. We’d like to replace it or go with finished concrete with some color. Positive referrals please. Any ideas of why it failed? Thank you very much. This last summer, we had the same problem with the floor tiles lifting in our six-year-old house. It started on the roof, and later we had to replace all the tiles on the second floor as well.

We'd love to know what caused it... There seem to be many opinions. The albañiles say that the person who originally installed the tiles did not wet the concrete enough before adding the glue. Not sure about that... The concrete under the loose tiles was like powder...as if the surface of the concrete somehow failed.

I'm not an expert, but in my 8-year old house none of my tiles have failed, even those outside exposed to the elements. My speculation:

1. Non-ceramic Mexican floor tiles are somewhat porous and vulnerable to moisture. I have seen quite a few that have lifted. If you really want Mexican tile, there are high fired ones available at a higher price.b

2. Improper concrete subfloor, which should certainly not be powdery. Some builders add too much additional lime to the mix, okay for flexible stucco walls but not in floors and foundations.

3. Improper floor adhesive used. Use a good quality floor adhesive, not a wall tile adhersive or anything else.

4. Uneven subfloor, which could allow air gaps under tiles.

Joel is fantastic. You can find him on the weekends selling Churros. He just laid our tile and is the best. Cheers. Carla
