Brown horse, black mane and tail, nice feet. Very sad condition. It is on the south side of the arroyo, just up the hill a block. Who should I call? Does anyone offer help to neglected horses? Thank you.

Rhonda has talked to the owner and is trying to help the situation. It seems there were 2 horses that were left in very terrible condition. The new owner is trying his best to get them in better condition but is having trouble paying for good food and medicine. If anyone can help out please contact Cisco's Amigos at the above e-mail address.

Giving carrots is a nice gesture, but if the horse is not used to having them, too many could cause a serious stomach problem and make them sick. That goes for adding any new or different to the horses diet. Better to find some type of grasses they are used to eating and water.

This horse, if it is the same one, is not just hungry, it is a bag of bones and looks worse than any I have seen in a long time. It has so many ticks in its ears you just cannot believe it is possible.I have never seen anything like it before. These ticks will be falling all over in the streets and laying billions of eggs very soon and man, will that be a big tick explosion here in La Manz for the street dogs, mapaches and feral cats. I am glad someone found the owner. I was trying to find out whose it was as well, and how can we help it. It is in really bad condition. Will get some dinero there asap, and hope others will help as well. Is the Vet tending to it??? sure hope someone who knows what to do is on board because I think it needs a lot more than carrots if it is going to survive.

Once you have owners permission, to cure that horse 2-4 table spoons of "brewers yeast" mix into a pint of oats as will be bitter, some molasses make it all go quick, a solid week every day should bring it under control, then once a week, my grandad's recipe, he was big animal vet, used it on ranch bought mine in five gallon buckets for cows as well, horse, dogs take maybe 1 tea spoon, no more problems for dogs once a day for week then once a week, goes without saying bedding and such must be clean or mucked out, best of luck, bueno.

This is a report of what is going on with the horses. It's obviously a struggle for survival.

Rocio started the treatment with hydrating them intravenously with a vitamin mineral additive added to it...then gave them various injections of supplements, iron, and different immune boosters, as well as antibiotics. We left Enrique with tons of medicine that was to be refrigerated and administered by him with the instructions (this is where I have my doubts) as well as I bought a bale of alfalfa and a big bag of good quality grain mixture. Because they have had only grass, the alfalfa and grain need to be introduced very slowly in small quantities or it will shock their system. If they survive over the next two weeks, we can then start a program of parasite removal...very slowly. The white one also has a tumour reducing drug that gets administered intravenously, 4 days on then 4 days off, then 4 days on."

I wil consult with Rocio regarding the ticks. Cisco's Amigos has Fibronil which is the active ingredient in Frontline that is used on large animlas(horses, pigs, etc) . Perhaps she has already put it on the horses.

Is there a large animal vet in our area?

The 2 horses were visited today . They seemed to be responding very well to the treatment our local Vet, Rocio, has been providing for them. I salute her for her compassion and care she is giving.
As far as large animal vets , in Mexico, all veterinary students are educated on all types of animals. It's not like the US where there are specialties. Years of experience and where you live is the key.

I am sorry to report that both of these horse will be put down later today.

The tumor the white one has is an incurable cancer and he has been suffering long enough. The Bay is suffering from extreme parasites and other health problems that only a human with a substantial amount of money, time and a green pasture might cure.
Both of these horses have been together suffering for a very long time, perhaps year. It is best they go together to greener pastures.

At least we were able to provide them good food and tick relief for their last 2 weeks .

With a very heavy heart,

Julie
