Humans of La Manzanilla - Chayo

A woman rode her bike up next to Cafe Del Mar today, leaned over and said ( in Spanish) 'good morning, David'. I didn't recognize her, but said good morning, and she rode off.

A minute later, I realized, 'that's Chayo!'. I rode after her and caught up, and that's when I got the whole story.

Many know Chayo as the lady who sold hot dogs in the jardin on weekends, or on the street in front of her home. She offered many 'home stays' in her rental rooms for people who want to come to La Manz to learn Spanish.

Her three children - Isis, Bryan, and Jenny - are all 'muy educado' and well known around town.

David, is there still a need for this community to assist Chayo's family financially?

Chayo did not ask for financial help, but the truth is, she won't be able to work for at least another year. I would say that any kind of help would be welcome.

But in talking with her, I realized Chayo has a new calmness, more depth, more perspective, perhaps more insight, than before her illness. She is not grasping after material things. I really got the sense of a strong spirit shining out of a perhaps frail but recovering body.

You expressed that so beautifully, David, and what a perfect photo of
Chayo, surrounded by Andres' mosaics. Thank you.

A very moving story about a strong and courageous woman. It makes my self perceived problems seem so trivial. Thanks David.

Thanks so much for posting this.

Judith and I stayed several times with Chayo and family some years ago, and we have enjoyed watching the kids grow up.

There was an initial local financial aid drive that I am sure helped a great deal, but if there is still significant debt, it would be wonderful if something else were initiated from there (we are sadly not there this season). We will find a way to contribute in any case, but I am pretty sure more could be raised quite easily.

Thanks again David.

I understand the Chayo is now serving hot dogs at her home in the evening. More information would be appreciated. I stayed with her family many years ago. She is a wonderful, gracious woman.

Oh yes, she serves from Monday to Friday beginning around 7 PM. I am not a hot dog fan, but her's are the best. A work of 'hot doggin' art and extremely delicious. Tacos barbacoa are also available and they are fantastic. On Friday's during lent she has shrimp and fish tacos as well as the same for hot dogs and burgers, replacing meat. My wife and I eat there at least three times a week since she opened. Good food and a beautiful family. God bless them all.
