Global Divestment Day Event in La Manznilla

Posted by Liza( &amp on February 9, 2015, 10:33 pm

"We are standing in a window of opportunity -- a once-in-a-generation opportunity to totally overhaul our energy system.

The climate movement is on the rise, people power is beating back extreme energy from New York to Scotland, and renewable energy is cheaper than ever before. At the same time, tumbling oil prices -- which conventional wisdom says is bad news for the climate -- mean that the vast profits that underpin the fossil fuel industry’s power are on unusually shaky ground.

Suddenly fossil fuels are on the defensive. Suddenly tar sands and fracking don’t look like such hot investments anymore. Respectable, prudent fund managers are seriously considering taking their money out of fossil fuels, and many of them have already done so."

Feb 13 is Global Divestment Day.
350.org is asking for photos from communities all around the world.
I am interested in gathering a group of folks here in La Manzanilla, to be in a photograph that we can upload to the website showing communities around the globe in support of the movement. They are well organized, check this link:

If anybody wants to get together to talk about this, I am free Wednesday and Thursday..

Afterwards, how about making your way up to the YES school garden where there will a salad lunch and have another photo there with secundaria students. You can see the sustainable vision for the future here in La Manzanilla! It starts at 12:00 and is free or by donation.

Yesterday I painted a 12 ft. orange and black banner for us all to hold in the photo. It says "Renewable Energy Our Future".
I will be at the Market tomorrow right outside of the Muy Rico Alimentos stand and Cafe Del Mar at 11 am. However many people want to gather, for a photo will be great!
Sally, Dave, Carole, Ike, Barry, Micki, Joyce and anybody else!! Remember they are asking for us to wear orange if possible!

Norma, I love your idea. I will carry the banner to the YES Garden right after our photo and see if students want to have a photo. I will submit both photos to the website so La Manzanilla can be well represented!
Remind us all please where the YES Garden is so more people might join in the salad lunch..

I appreciate the supportive energy around this and on behalf of future generations I say thank you to everybody who stands up and speaks out to protect our environment.

I have a large orange duvet cover and a black sheet - would they be useful? I plan to be there regardless...
Thanks for initiating this Liza!

Thanks for initiating this, Liza!

By the way, the black background banner
is a re-used item, not something purchased new for the event. It was, and
will be again, used as a rain tarp.... maybe sooner than we think!

OK, I am in general agreement with this endeavour, however there are some other things to think about.
Nuclear fission is potentially far worse than fossil when something particularly bad happens.
Renewables definitely have their place but until a suitabley clean solar manufacturing, and clean battery technology arrives, it's not a complete solution.
I have lived here, on the beach for up to 5 months, with nothing but solar quite successfully, but I'm not prepared to do so in Canadian winter.
There are other options:

(And a million other links if you care to ask)

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like a bunch of people plan to show up at for the photo.. We will meet with the banner outside Cafe Del Mar and probably stand for the photo in the Jardin with the palm trees behind us.

The global organizers suggest we wear orange if we can, and also show anything around us that is related to climate change.. I am thinking we might get some of our bikes in the photo, and maybe people could hold some orange fruit like a papaya and grapefruit We will get creative! Not sure why orange is the color for this campaign, but we can work with it!

See you all at 11:00!

Gail Weiss took this photo of nearly 40 people at 11:00 am today. Just after we all dispersed, the entire Nia Dance class dressed in orange and festooned with orange flowers came up from the beach to be in the photo. At least I have a picture in my mind with all of you!!

This image has been sent to the 350.org site and I will post a link to that site when the photos from all around the globe are in.

This event sparked a lot of conversation. The most fascinating to me is this link sent by Harald Paimann about a super fast electric car recently developed in Germany that runs on salt water and leaves no toxins. Check it out! The future is now!!

http://aetherforce.com/electric-car-powered-by-salt-water-920-hp-373-milestank/

The banner then took a trip with Kushad and Wendy to the Tieralegre community garden where more photos were taken with the high school students at their celebratory salad buffet.
Thank you Carol for your black tarp, thank you Barry for helping me with the banner, thank you Mabel for the words in Spanish, and Thank you Deni for being my cheerleader.

THANK YOU ONE AND ALL! Together we have a voice!

I admire your aspirations but until there is campaign finance reform
big money will trump you in the end. This issue is the first place to focus.

Lawrence Lessig is a good leader on this.

Just for fun I looked up some carbon figures. The average human is responsible for 4 tons of carbon foot print a year. One person flying coach round trip SEA to ZLO with a stop at LAX will generate almost one ton of carbon footprint. Food for thought

"Average human" is a strange set of words when comparing the numbers.

"Examining CO2 per capita around the world also shows us the gulf between
the developed world's responsibility for climate change and that of the
developing world. While Australia is on 20.6 tonnes per person (partly because
of its reliance on CO2-intensive coal) and the UK is half that at 9.7
(explained in part by relatively CO2-light gas power stations), India is
on a mere 1.2. Poorer African nations such as Kenya are on an order magnitude
less again – the average Kenyan has a footprint of just 0.3 tonnes (a figure
that's likely to drop even lower with the country's surge in wind power)".

1/2 way down the page

I am not a naysayer but when Looking at the http://350.org/ website under Resources is a link to a Do the Math - The Movie. Bill McKibben is educating people about global warming as he drives around the country in his big ass motor home.

Carbon Footprint Calculator

Having a bit of fun with this topic.

Carbon Footprint Calculator

http://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx

One person flying from La to Manzanillo round trip
= 0.38 metric tons (.8 more than the anual average for Kenya).

One person flying from Vancouver to LA to Manzanillo round trip
= 0.68 metric tons

Driving a 1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER 4WD 3.3 liter, Auto from La to Puerto Vallarta = 1220 miles
= 0.78 metric tons

My Carbon Footprint:
House 0.54
Flights 0.00
Car 0.20
Motorbike 0.00
Bus & Rail 0.00
Secondary 5.97
Total = 6.71 metric tons of CO2e

I am almost 3 tons over the global average and I don't travel,
cook, heat, cool or have hot water! The most CO2 intensive thing I
consume is bottles of Tequila (the bottles of which I am saving). Maybe I
should get a barrel of Tequila delivered as a way to offset my CO2
