Fish co- op

Posted by Judy S on February 26, 2015, 7:07 pm

I just had a very disturbing incident at the fish co-op. We went in to buy fish for dinner. They seemed to have only one, but it was still flopping on the table so we knew it was fresh. We said we would take it and asked him to fillet it for us. Much to our horror the fish was filleted without being killed. My friend, who speaks fluent Spanish, begged the man to kill it but he refused. The still breathing remainder was then tossed in the garbage. In hind sight I should not have taken the fish as I can't face eating it now. Is this a common thing? It's so sadistic!

Fish don't breathe. I suppose if the fish was still alive you could have paid for it, taken it back to the water, tried to revive it, and let it go. I hear Mexicans laughing.

Really, then what are gills for? Personally I kill crabs/lobsters just before cooking. Some of us at least try to be humane and don't enjoy torturing our food before we eat it. We did beg the guy to kill it as soon as we saw what he planned to do.

And we boil crab and lobster alive. Get over it. I'm going for sushi now. Fresh is best.

I go through almost the same thing with the fisher persons who fish around
here, I ask them to hit the fish over the head so I don't empathize with it as it
flops gasping for water on the beach.
It is debatable if fish experience pain, I certainly hope not, but seeing
things like this make me wonder http://giant.gfycat.com/FineJubilantBoubou.gif

There are competitions in the world who can serve the freshest fish.(NSFL Not safe for Life)

I have resigned to thinking more about what we do to each other.
