Ephren's Art Class for La Manz Kids

Ephren Gonzales was demonstrating his painting techniques for the La Catalina scholarship students this afternoon.

We were impressed with his attitude and what he had to say about art being a very possible occupation for the children of this pueblo. He said most kids will end up being gardeners, house maids, or fishermen like their fathers and mothers. But he urged the kids to realize that they can live different, more satisfying lives with art, and make money too.

It was also very interesting to watch his painting develop... The kids were fascinated! Muchas gracias Ephren!

Great photos, David. Your reporting on the event might have said that the teaching of art to the scholarship students was started by a group of Art Walk artists, headed by Ron Stock and Dave Sullins. Since then Jane Sterritt and Annie Olson have taught classes, soon to be follwed by lessons by Rennie Holley and Pam Field. The program receives funding from Art Walk, along with generous donations of time and materials from Efren.

As Efren points out, the goal of these classes is to encourage the pursuit of artistiic endeavours as a viable interest among local youth.

Thanks for filling us in on the art classes, Larry; it's so nice of these artists to offer their time like this - what an opportunity for the kids of La Manz!

Ron Stock also announced at Efren's class that, in November 2015, the Galeria La Manzanilla will be hosting a show of the best of the La Catalina scholarship students' art. Can't wait!

Ephren is definitely one of the good guys. His art programs for kids here in Ajijic are legend and extremely popular. He is one of our true patrons and pillars of the community.

Efren also has great practical ideas. This is the raffle I have going on
while I gallery sit at my show in his gallery in Ajijic.

It's so easy to run - people just
fill in their email address on the number or numbers they choose.
You can see the list in behind the watercolor.

Then on Friday, we will
draw one winning number for this, or one of my other watercolors.
I am planning to use the proceeds to buy supplies for a workshop with Mabel
Sanchez Morales for some of the kids in La Manzanilla. Mabel collaborates with
Lety Hernandez and they use sticks gathered from the beach and made into
practical artisan pieces, like the lamps in front of Lety and Conrado's new office
building in La Manz.
