This has been an interesting thread. FAFTA is really proving to be a head ache for many Americans.
One can be optimistic and think that as these woes become apparent they might generate enough back lash that reasonable modifications will be made. The problem with this line of thought is that before anything happens in Washington a concerted effort has to be made the by those affected to get the attention of our elected officials. Since the expat community is not well organized and rather diverse the best hope would be for some of the big corporations to step in if FAFTA makes to to hard or expensive to send executives overseas.
Or one can be more paranoid. My brother reports that when he was living and working in Italy he woke up one fine morning to find the Italian Government had confiscated 10% of all bank accounts to pay its bills. It is way easier for the government to get its hand on your money if is all at home.
