Back in Canada, listening to CBC, I heard yet another slant on the way
we are polluting the oceans with micro particles of plastic.
Here's a way we in La Manzanilla can keep one small plastic bottle out of the garbage
stream. In a restaurant, if you want some plain water to drink, ask for
'un vasso con agua del garafon' (corrections of my Spanish welcomed)
You'll get a glass of water from the big bottle that all the restaurants
have already, to use in cooking.
You will be using the first R - refuse - and the water you get will be just
as pure - or purer - than the single use bottle they might otherwise serve you.
In my experience, some restaurants prefer to serve the single use bottle so
they can charge you for it. Fair enough, they need to make a profit in their
business. So, just refuse the small bottle, request the glass of water, and
offer to pay 10 or 15 pesos for it.
It's worth it to be able to 'refuse' extra packaging, and still get what you want.
