I just returned from a super well organized tour of the Copper Canyon with Eco-Mex of Melaque. It was not only a visual paradice but a learning experience re the northern part of this great country Mexico. Along with the geography was the cultural aspect of the Tarahumara indigenous and their artistic products. All parts were well done from initial pick up almost at our door to planes, trains, vans, hotels, guides, hikes.Well worth the cost to be so well cared for .....cocktails to warm air tight heaters at night. | ------------------------Re: Copper Canyon

Been wanting to go there for years but was thinking it had been totally taken over by the cartels. An incredible adventurer I met in Alaska named Dick Griffen and his wife did the first float trip down the canyon and he wrote a book, "Canyons and Ice", about that trip as well as his unbelievable solo treks around the vast reaches of Alaska. He of course used Tarahumara guides in order to complete the voyage down the Canyon and spoke highly of them. He did that back in the early '50s. Then read more about the canyon and the Tarahumaras in the book about ultra marathon runners called "Born to Run". The semi ultra run was canceled this year in the canyon because it was not considered safe. So glad to hear you were able to get there and enjoyed the trip. Dick Griffen went back in the '70's or early '80s on the train up from coast,( Las Mochis?). He was with a tour group including his mother who had always wanted to see where he had made the arduous float years before. Thinking he knew better than the locals who were warning him to not go into the canyon he ventured back into a country that was no longer as empty or safe as it had been in the '50s. He encountered narcos just as they warned and he had barely escaped with his life. Would love to hear more about your trip. We had a tour of the coffee cooperative booked with Mexeco but not enough people were interested so will just have to come back and try again next year. | ------------------------Re: Copper Canyon
