I believe on the 2 routes between Manzanillo & Tepic the distance is more or less the same. Via Guad. you benefit from reasonable double lane the whole way, while via PV on #200, it's a nasty piece of single track. The 1st option has tolls a lot of the way, and calls for close attention to navigate through the big smoke. | ------------------------Re: Guadalajara route.

My recollection, from a few years ago, is that driving to Nogales via Guad adds about 4 hours to the trip. I really like the PV route, though I understand it's been a bit messed up since the rains. (Perhaps that's all been repaired) I find it varied and interesting and devoid of the heavy traffic issues. (2 cents)

Did highway 200 last week. From La Manz to PV was no worse than usual, with only short sections under construction. From PV to Nogales, there is a fair bit of new road in the two southbound lanes. A fair bit of the northbound lands are the original two- lane road, which is rough for long stretches but nothing that would take your suspension out. The new Mazatlan by-pass is beautiful and spares you of all congestion of the city. Warning - gas up at the Pemex at the start of the new by-pass. There are no gas stations for a long way after that. | ------------------------Maybe headed to Texas

We were wondering which way might be either faster or less aggravating to get to Tepic. We usually go via PV, and it usually takes 7 hours, more or less. We decided to go the same way leaving on Monday, and it took 8 hours this time. The road to PV was probably better than usual. 3 hours. Stopped in Mismaloya for a nice lunch. One hour to get through PV. Nueva Vallatra area was moving pretty well. The coast road from Bucerias to Guayabitos was very busy and slow, with limited passing opportunities. The road going up the hill to Compostela was super slow, with many overheated cars on the side of the road. There was a large contingent of federales at the top, presumably the cause of the problem. We'd pay the extra tolls to go via Guad, but not if it takes 4 hours longer. | ------------------------Re: Guadalajara route.

We avoided the Compostela segment on our return NOB by heading north at Las Varas and driving through San Blas. Then east to the toll hwy, thereby bypassing Tepic. The traffic was very manageable (light) , but the first approx. 10 miles north from Las Varas was "B" grade two lane highway i.e. rough pavement and the usual -- lack of signage through some small towns. Scenic and casual driving otherwise. It will be our preferred route. jt | ------------------------
