A lot of people have been wondering about the modern new building in town, on Maria Asuncion, close to Tierralegre. It is called Casa Marmaya, and is owned by Conrado, an architect, and Lety, an interior designer, who is also trained in landscape design and lighting design.
Check out the lamps, one in front of the shop and one inside; they were designed by Lety to be made from recycled materials – twigs from the beach, and pieces of fabric that both produce a beautiful quality of light.
I am hoping more of the businesses in town will follow their lead and soften the light from the bare light bulbs that seem to have increased lately. Lety contracted Mabel of Artisanik Pazifico, (the shop next to the bookstore) to make the lampshades, so it is a La Manzanilla co-operative project.
It’s so good to see this co-operation boosting local economy, while re-using and recycling local materials. Another interesting feature is Conrado’s design – room dividers made of stripped natural poles of wood. They allow light to pass through, and still have the effect of dividing up a room into smaller areas - like translucent walls.
And – this is exciting for me - they have lovely walls where paintings and artisan works are being displayed! It is really a treat for us artists to have attractive new spaces to hang our work. So thank you, Lety and Conrado, for building such a beautiful space to house your new business.
Gracias casa marmaya...
