Plasticizing our world

Back in Canada, listening to CBC, I heard yet another slant on the way we are polluting the oceans with micro particles of plastic. Here's a way we in La Manzanilla can keep one small plastic bottle out of the garbage stream. In a restaurant, if you want some plain water to drink, ask for 'un vasso con agua del garafon' (corrections of my Spanish welcomed) You'll get a glass of water from the big bottle that all the restaurants have already, to use in cooking. You will be using the first R - refuse - and the water you get will be just as pure - or purer - than the single use bottle they might otherwise serve you. In my experience, some restaurants prefer to serve the single use bottle so they can charge you for it. Fair enough, they need to make a profit in their business. So, just refuse the small bottle, request the glass of water, and offer to pay 10 or 15 pesos for it. It's worth it to be able to 'refuse' extra packaging, and still get what you want.

Congratulations to you for awakening our thinking and to make a difference in the future. It is important to think about where plastic products end up. Many forms of plastic are in the ocean where fish swallow it and sea animals become entangled in it. Thank you. | ------------------------Re: Plasticizing our world

Another way to reduce wastes, is to take a container (tupperware or other) for leftovers when you eat out. | ------------------------Re: Plasticizing our world

Thanks for your responses! I was hoping we could start a list of ideas that could be used in La Manz specifically - and here goes! How about a pollo asado container, so Mele could put the pollo, rice, tortillas, etc. all in one big reusable container. I really never liked the idea of all that hot food being served in plastic anyway. Aren't scientists saying it dissolves into the food, especially when it is hot?

I recommend pyrex containers with plastic lids. You can get them at the big box stores in Manzanillo. | ------------------------Re: Plasticizing our world

We took plastic glasses down there last season and took them to the beach and had them filled with water or whatever. Friends brought thermos like containers with them, and didn't use plastic. We used the Pyrex dishes to get sushi from Sammy on the weekend. I'll use it for pollo asado next season. Great idea! I think that would be good for Chayo's too. (How do we happened to know all these places! ) There a bit of a business for someone who wants to sell plastic glasses with straws in them. The tianguis would be perfect for this. They sell them in Mexico because our friend gave us one after another broke in our luggage. Probably in Guadalajara, if not Manzanillo. However, they're easy to pack. Stuff some socks or other small clothing pieces in the glass. Just some ideas most of you are trying by now, anyway. Good! From NOB, Vicki

Yada yada yada Just like oil is a pollutant, it came from the ground! Just like anal Gore "the earth is getting hotter!" Just a bunch of bs. Sure I really hate when you see on the side of the road a bunch of trash. IMHO I think it would be better if you went out and cleaned up the trash on the side of the road but then I suppose that would take out of your drinking, eating out and preaching time.....

Jose How about not trying to eliminate the road side trash by not using throw away stuff? Oil comes from the ground, but really messes up the ocean. The last 2 years are the warmest recorded in recent history, but also have had the oddest weather. Why so negative? Lyn | ------------------------A Truly Negative Post

You know, Jose, they are ways with disagreeing with folks without being a total jerk Unfortunately, you chose the latter approach to express your point of view, such as it was. | ------------------------Re: A Truly Negative Post

The point is it would be better to pick up the trash that others left and maybe some locals will see it and not throw there trash anymore. It's the locals that need to learn to care about the area. Just by bringing glass dishes will really do nothing to teach the locals about conservation because the locals don't go to the places you eat at. Maybe have some locals help you clean up so they learn, especially the kids. Also, even if you eat out everyday for a year it won't add up to the amount of trash you could clean up in just one day. | ------------------------Re: A Truly Negative Post

Thanks for re-stating your concern, Jose, this post is easier to relate to. I think that if you bring a glass dish with a lid, and present it to Mele for your pollo asado, it will look so attractive and convenient, you won't have to say a word - the vendor, and anyone else will be impressed, and they might (or might not) do the same thing. Enrique and Lidia now always ask, "Necesita una bolsa?", when I am checking out my groceries. When I open up my tiny stuff sack, with a big reusable grocery bag attached, I always get a big smile from them. It's not a big deal, but I think it shows that we both care about saving one piece of plastic from getting into the waste stream... poco a poco. | ------------------------That One Wasn't Any Better

I just can't fathom the depth of your apparent feeling of superiority over the locals here. There are a lot of gringos that leave and pick up trash. Every morning there are locals picking up trash on the beach. The fact that Mexico has a problem with plastic containers is not the issue. If I had my way, there would be tree farms in the jungle to make pulp and paper bags. But, although a permanent resident, it's simply not my call. Nor yours. | ------------------------Re: Plasticizing our world

Jose, you can still enjoy a cold beverage while picking up garbage. Perhaps that beverage would be in a glass bottle, which is returnable, or aluminum can, which you can get money for when empty!!!! Guess you could preach also, but probably not.., that would take time away from drinking.. Also what does IMHO mean???

Years ago living in Baja everyone brought their own containers from home when buying from the taco stands and even in the Deli section of the CCC super mercado. The merchants like it because it saves them money on takeout containers and I liked it especially because I used Corning Ware and could pop everything into the fridge when I got home. For those who don't want to pack hard. OntIners around...try afew zip lock bags in your pocket or purse..they are reusable and very easy to clean. | ------------------------Re: Plasticizing our world

The initialism1 IMHO stands for "in my humble opinion". It's commonly used in text-based communication (chat clients, forums, popular Q&A platforms. Taking this is what she meant but it could be something derogatory also. Wonder if she is comparing the trash problem with the oil spill they just had in CA.? | ------------------------Re: IMAO

I often find those who use IMHO might, more accurately, use IMAO -- in my arrogant opinion . . . or even IMSA -- in my screaming arrogance! Hey, we could have fun with this. :O) | ------------------------plastic garbage

Anyway- what we can do personally about plastic garbage is only small but at least the awareness of the problem can be addressed. There are people in La Manz who pick up the trash everyday of their stay in the town, the school kids do too with the school teacher on regular basis, I pick it up in my area and others do as well. It's all good but the problem is worldwide with the modern day overuse of plastic, check out the alarming videos. We are eating it in the sealife, breathing it in the air, and drinking it in our water. The latest one that alarms me is the poly micro beads in some skin cleansers and toothpaste. Now I read the labels! The town of La Manzanilla is so much better than it was 10 or 20 years ago. In fact all of Mexico is cleaner. I think that the awareness of the garbage problem is spreading to the new generation. But still, will the earth ever be totally clean again as long as us humans are here? I doubt it but all we can personally do is try to make it better. | ------------------------Re: plastic garbage

Yes saw a Netflix film on the Micro beads now in fish and a beach where there were dead birds that had been washed up onto the shore. Upon looking inside to see why they had died, it was seen they had been feeding on the plastic. | ------------------------California Assembly votes to ban plastic microbeads
