It will be ready to give cash in the next hour after the big grand opening. They have the streets closed off, a tent, lots of people in the same color shirts. Big day for La Manz!

If I were religious, I'd probably say "Hallelujah!" But as I'm not, I'll just say wonderful, wonderful, wonderful... About time it happened after so many close calls. I know for some this event may signal the start of the "end of times", but for most of us, whether locals or northern visitors, I think it'll be much appreciated. | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

But the scuttlebutt today is that you need to open a Caja Solidaria account and use only its debit card in the ATM machine, despite the list of cards accepted on the entrance door. Hope it's not true, as that would not make a whole lot of sense... | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

So would opening an account with Caja Solidaria expose a U.S. citizen to Treasury/IRS reporting rules? | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

I Googled a bit and didn't find an answer, but I would assume that they follow the same reporting schedule as other banks. If they didn't they would be the most popular money handler in Mexico! | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

Thanks Daniel I wasn't sure if they were a "bank". I have heard many banks in Mexico are now reluctant to have U.S. customers because of the reporting requirements. | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

Hola. This is how I heard the rumor. The Caja ATM will serve any bank card introduced for whatever fee your bank charges. You do not need a Caja Solidaria account or card. However, if you have a Caja account or open one, then you can purchase a Caja bank card for $200 pesos. Your withdrawals are then free of charge and can be made at anytime. Don't know if this is a one time or yearly fee. I don't remember who can open an account and what is or is not reported. Only a couple of bank companies here are Mexican owned. the rest like Banamex and Bancomer are owned internationally and their earnings leave Mexico. Caja is connected to the Mexican banking system. I'm sure there is more informaion to come as we tease this one out. We'll have confusion and fun and I'm glad the AtM is finally working. Cruz | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

Thanks, Cruz, for your much better rumor! I'll test my Banamex debit card at the new ATM on Monday, figuring that the fee is well worth the bus fare and hassle of traveling to Melaque just to get cash. :-) | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

We tried the ATM with both MC and VISA non-chipped cards and neither worked. The machine said that it "temporarily" didn't work with our institution. Anyone have success yet? | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

I just went and got $5,000 pesos out with my Banamex bank card. Quite the experience. I had to press buttons (make choices) about 10 times and it charged my account $29 pesos. It was a strange experience as compared to the machine at Bamamex but I did get money! | ------------------------Re: Bank machine in La Manz

Well, that's one peso less than the round-trip bus fare to Melaque, not to mention a whole lot closer. I was hoping that someone would use his/her Banamex card before I tried mine, so now I'm feeling a whole lot braver. Thanks, Daniel! | ------------------------
