Help Wanted: rain reporter

In a few days I'll be leaving my rain gauge for a couple months or more (one of the reasons I need to "retire".) Is there anyone who stays here in La Manzanilla most of the time who would like to track the rainfall and report on any interesting rain totals here on the message board ("Rain Reporter")? I think that is the most popular weather report. It would also be great if we can keep the historical data record going with fewer big gaps than I was leaving. To continue the data record, there are a couple options. A few times during the year I can enter your rain data into the spreadsheets that I have that go back to 2004 for safe-keeping. Or if you like I can transfer the sheets to you if you are a little Excel / Open Office savvy. And if you don't have any kind of rain gauge, I can loan or donate a simple plastic gauge. It's a little easier to read and more accurate than a soup can and ruler . If you install it just right you might even be able to read it without going outside and getting wet! Just let me know in the next couple days if you're interested in this gauge. The other data I've been collecting (daily max/min temperatures and daily max/min humidities) would take a little more work to explain and transfer. If anyone is up for that data-taking, let me know soon. Don't worry if you have to miss an occasional daily rainfall measurement. Almost anything will be better than the huge data gaps that I have been leaving the last 2-3 years! Step right up and give it a try!

Good news! Tom and Mary Jo have generously offered to be the La Manzanilla rain reporters. Bravo! They will measure any interesting rainfalls and report them on the board (probably not the annoying little 1/16" rainfalls and such.) Remember the rain reporter position did not include measuring/reporting on temperatures/humidities. Also not included is reporting on hurricanes. Unless someone else volunteers to do this reliably, I recommend that everyone keeps their own eye out for developing or approaching storms. You can do a basic storm check in just a minute every day. Just choose your favorite hurricane tracking website, save it on your desktop or in your favorites, and click on it daily (or how often you prefer.) I like the Weather Underground for hurricane warning and tracking, but there are plenty of others. Some are more "simplified" than Weather Underground. Here is the Weather Underground Eastern Pacific storm tracking page (which actually includes much of the Central Pacific region also): http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/?index_region=ep This overview map will show you all the current storms (there are three right now), and also any "Invests" that are likely to develop into a named storm. You can click on any of these storms, or just scroll down to see all the prediction maps and other details for each storm. Here is TD-14E's details: Good hunting, and I'll chime in occasionally during my travels if I have internet and time. Thanks again Tom and Mary Jo!
