Tsunami Practice

A meeting will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, in the Ejido meeting room at 5:00 pm where firemen from Melaque will make a presentation in Spanish on where to go and what to do in case of an earthquake/tsunami event. We have an earthquake fault nearby at 50 km west in the ocean which makes us vulnerable to both. then again, nothing may happen for years, but who knows and a little information may be helpful. Nationwide, Mexico is commemorating the earthquake in Mexico City of 2005. On Saturday, the 19th, at about 11:00 AM, a practice evacuation drill is to be held all over Mexico and in our pueblo. When you hear the LM tsunami warning/alert siren, everyone has 5 minutes to get to higher ground or a second story building. Whether at home or about, pick a higher destination. there will be all kinds of Government and military personnel here in LM to evaluate the timing and effectiveness of the response in each sector. the schools will hold instructional drills on the 17th and 18th and the children will be told to participate along with their parents on the 19th. Be advised and don't panic. this is just a dress rehearsal but your participation is important. Be there or be square and support our locals. thanks to Lisa Fern who told us about the first meeting, not attended by many because the word didn't get out. Cruz

It would be nice if we had a handout of this information for the snowbirds.n Maybe the information could also be post at various restaurants and on poles on the main streets to give people information as to where to go. The bookstore would be a good place for handouts. | ------------------------Re: Tsunami Practice

Good ideas. I hope they can be put into practice. I'll do my bit by trying to remember to request this information so that more of us can see it. In the first meeting, they showed the streets one should walk up, being calm of course, but steady. In the 1995 tsunami people had to live at the school and then in the sports field for over three months because many homes were damaged and food could only be gotten in the camps from the military. the water ruined everything. Make- shift ramadas were built so that the children could be schooled. Luckily it didn't rain hard here during this time and the food and people were safe unlike in other towns. On and on.
