I want to post a generous Thank You to Paul for introducing me to La Manzanilla. He allowed Lola and I to accompany him on his arduous drive from Roseburg, Oregon, back to his beloved home he so missed on the beach. My Long time friend Sally had told me for years about her love of this area and people. When I saw the door open this time I jumped in with both feet. What an experience. Paul offered shelter, from the storm in a strong fortress on the beach. The least likely place to feel safe at the time. When all others said get out and seek shelter inland, he said he couldn't imagine any other place where we would have everything we needed. He was right (again). Lola and I will always be grateful for his faith in his home. He shared his precious space with us for 2 weeks. He was patient and kind everyday, even though he had his own losses and struggles to deal with. I met some wonderful people through him. It was an unusual and unique time in La Manz. What an honor for me to be there for this unexpected event in my life. Although We are back in our Roseburg home, the time, thoughts, and memories of Paul, his darling Kitties, the people, sights and sounds of La Manz still hold me tight. I so admire everyone's fortitude and resilience to clean up and get back to a new life. I feel happy I was a part of the evolution there. Here in the Burg, there is also much to be done. The leaves are falling, I need to get up on my roof and clean the gutters and unclog one of my chimneys. I started a fire to get the place warm on Thursday morning and it smoldered and spewed smoke out into the house all day. I couldn't shut it down enough to stop it. It reminded me of the smoldering burn piles of Palm leaves all over the streets and beach. That gave me some comfort. Continue to unpack and get things put away. Bring my space up to functioning again. The weather has been kind to me here. I love the fall sunshine and rain. So much for now. Kindest regards, Cassandra.
