Viva La Manzanilla! Update

It is now 12 days after the storm. Everywhere people are cleaning, removing brush, and getting businesses back up and running in preparation for the visitors that have already started arriving. Viva La Manzanilla! is still awaiting the transfer of the bulk of funds from the US and Canada, but in the meantime our team is using donations from friends and family in Mexico, and to date has put roofs on 5 houses which were completely torn off. Immediately after Hurricane Patricia hit, the message board came alive with offers to help the community. Viva La Manzanilla!, (a small group of local people plus one American, no website!), was formed as a method to collect and put to use the generous donations that were flowing in. With help, we installed 2 PayPal buttons on this board for US and Canadian donations. You can find them in hot pink at the top of the board. At the same time, an international group, Operation Blessing, got straight to work installing and repairing roofs of homeowners that met their qualifications. You can read Judy and Felipe’s “roof updates” on the message board to find out about the remarkable work they accomplished during their time here in La Manzanilla. Viva La Manzanilla currently doesn't have a huge amount of money to work with, (about $15,000 use so far), but we have the flexibility to address the needs of individual families, and to network to take advantage of opportunities as they appear. Because the need for shelter is still top priority, Viva La Manzanilla! is continuing to repair and replace roofs. In addition, we have purchased and delivered emergency food to a neighboring community, La Programa, delivered mattresses, clothes and other basic needs, provided lunch for the soldiers working here, and fuel for heavy equipment. Finally, we will not be using our funds to pay for labor, but instead are asking each family that receives help to then work on the next,( like Habitat for Humanity) This way the money will go further. We ask that you keep La Manzanilla in mind in the coming days as we dig out, and donate any amount you can. For those arriving who would like to donate in person, or physically help out, please stop by the office of Tenacatita Bay (Ada’s) Monday - Saturday 10-2 and speak to Josefina, or at Estudio Marmaya (Lety and Conrado) to drop off pesos or to volunteer. Thank you again for your love and support of this special little town!

Thanks mucho for the update, Lisa, and for your continuing Samaritanism. Sorry to hear that there's no cure for that affliction! You will probably have seen my email to you by now, letting you know that I got the Canadian donations wired this afternoon to Paul Z's account. Today marks the second week since Hurricane Patricia. We apologize for the less than instantaneous reporting and posting on the efforts of Viva La Manzanilla!, and all others pitching in to help. It’s a different world without internet or phone! Part of this effort is just connecting people with resources that are coming in. Please know that everyone in this wonderful village is working their butts off to clean, repair, and feed people, pets and other critters, all while trying to get routines and services back to “normal”! Viva La Manzanilla update - Conrado and a team of palaperos completed a new roof yesterday for a mother of 3 girls. This was a better choice for her house, and will last 5 years! To date We have put more than 6 roofs on houses that were destroyed. We will have another update after the weekend’s work. Thanks to the generosity of the owner of El Pollo, Señor Clemente Robles Rodriguez, and Paul Zuniga, the Viva La Manzanilla team is getting a special discounted price on roofing material. Gracias!! Dear Michel, and others arriving in La Manzanilla who may wish to help with hurricane relief, Thank you in advance for your generous donation! Our local group, Viva La Manzanilla, is accepting cash donations at the Tenacatita Bay office (Ada's property management) on the corner opposite Lydia's Market. Josefina Parilla is generally in the office between 10 and 2. If Josefina's office is closed, please see Lety Hernandez at Estudio Marmaya (Conrado and Lety's design business) to donate. That office is just across the street from the Tenacatita Bay office, with glass doors. All donations are used for roofs, new mattresses, stoves, and other basic needs. 24 families have already been helped. We anticipate serving another 15 families in the coming weeks. We can also accept donations of food stuffs. Most needed are: toilet paper, diapers, diaper wipes, toothpaste, soap, beans, cooking oil, rice, cookies, etc. I will post another update this week with photos. Thanks to all the volunteers and donors! | ------------------------
