Leaf Cutter Ants

Just planted new plants and the leaf cutters got at them last night. Will someone please tell me what the name of the poison is and where I can buy some? | ------------------------Re: Leaf Cutter Ants

We get it at El Pollo across from the jarden but haven't purchased any yet this year so don't know if they have it in stock. It is usually on their counter where they sit, on the right hand side. It is called Patron. You can find the ant holes best at night. You spoon the pellets in the hole, pour water in the hole and then cover the hole up. | ------------------------Re: Leaf Cutter Ants

Follow the advice given by Cathie above. It works. After losing the battle for 14 years Hector showed us how to do it and now we only have the occasional infestation. Follow them back to their entrance holes at night using a flashlight and mark them so you can do the deed next day. Sometimes they live next door or even further away. | ------------------------Re: Leaf Cutter Ants

A white powder product named Metilico comes in a Alu foil pouch bag. With a spoon just sprinkle a line in a wide circle around the base of each tree. Caution - it is very toxic to touch or breathe. | ------------------------Re: Leaf Cutter Ants

Wow! What a great video! thanks for posting it, Sherri. I've never seen the leaf cutters take the whole plant - they always leave a little, so it can recover, right? Val, please consider leaving them alone, so they can do their job. Your plants will be back, maybe stronger than ever for the experience. | ------------------------Re: Leaf Cutter Ants

Sorry Carol, but we will kill them without mercy. They have completely decimated a number of our plants, including trees. They are not an endangered species, rest assured. We only apply the Patron pellets when the hole is active. The ants actually drop their leaf pieces for the more attractive pellets. The moisture in the hole does the trick of turning the pellets into a poisonous gas without our having to add water. It has never failed us when we have applied while the ants are actively using the hole. Sounds like the other method works too, but it might be a little harder to gauge the results your way. | ------------------------
