Dangerous collision

This afternoon, in the bay in front of our house here in La Manz, a banana boat collided with a kayak piloted by Brenda Dempsey. The boat towing the banana was going at a high rate of speed, altered course, and hit Brenda's kayak amidships. The operator of the speed boat did not stop. Brenda was able to jump free of the kayak just in time, but the collision was so close she could feel the boat graze past her head. She said the boat operator saw her In the water, but still did not stop. She was finally helped to shore by a lifeguard and another man. She was shaken but not injured, luckily. These boats are not operating with a spotter, which is a highly dangerous practice, illegal in most countries. This collision could have easily been fatal, as the speed boat hit the kayak exactly where Brenda was sitting.

Oh, Brenda, what a shock you've had. Thank heavens your reaction was swift and that you were not injured. It is, indeed, a HAPPY Christmas for you! Sending you healing energy and lots of love. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

Oh ! We are so happy that this was not as bad as it could have been. Good reactions Brenda, Your karma is obviously in good shape. I hope the boat operator has been given a wake up. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

Sorry to hear of this, but not too surprised from the irresponsible practices observed. Certainly glad you are OK. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

The boats pulling the bananas or other floaties are so high in the front as they pull their loads they really see nothing in front. David is right for two reasons as the front spotter weighs down the bow so both the pilot and the spotter can see and be on the look out. Seems like a good solution. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

FYI...The other man that alerted the life guard and swim out to help was Keith Van Benchoten from Virginia. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

Wondering why there is not a stronger reaction to this event. The fact that there can be an incident like this, which could easily have resulted in a death, is appalling. High speed motor boat close to shore, no spotter, failure to stop at the scene. Come on! This is, in my country ( forgive the " cultural differences"), an absolute no go. The operator of this boat should be fined and disallowed from operating in the bay. Glad to hear you're okay, Brenda. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

So glad to hear you are not injured Brenda... Hopefully this incident will be reported to the Delegado and also to La Huerta...who knows what will come of that, but it should be done and hopefully some action can be taken so this kind of thing does not happen again. I am surprised there are not more incidents actually...and also on the beach where some people drive those quads at breakneck speed...it is pretty scary being in the way of one of those things and not knowing if the person is actually going to slow down or not. so glad Brenda was able to jump out of the way of this one. You should report this to the delegado, to Ministerio Público in La Huerta and Capitanía de Puerto in Barra de Navidad. A friend of mine died in similar conditions in melaque some months ago. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

I also came very close to being hit by the boat and inflatable "big Mabel" while swimming in relatively shallow water out front of the playa azul restaurant yesterday afternoon. There were plenty of other swimmers nearby including a mother with baby. We reported it to the lifeguard. I'd give this crew a wide berth if you are on the beach. | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

Our daughter had a close call too. She tried to warn them but he didn't hear her or see her. Terrible . | ------------------------Re: Dangerous collision

Maybe a lot of concerned folks need to go over together and talk to the guy! If there was a horde of people he would have to take it seriously! This is truly more than "an accident waiting to happen" Brenda could have been severely injured or killed! And she her kayak looks like a write off which obviously no one has offered to recompense her for. | ------------------------Re:Dangerous collision

As I am reading this message, I see a blue kayak with two people paddling by. A banana boat, with no spotter, just sped by the kayak within 20 metres of them. The boat operator clearly could not see over the bow of the boat. Incredible but true. | ------------------------Re:Dangerous collision

Thank you friends for all your kind support. I will be in touch with the Ejido this week, I doubt I can make it to La Huerta with out a car. As the banana boats are still operating without spotters I would like to see at least that enforced. I got back on the horse so to speak today and paddled out to La Manzanita. You can be sure I was observant and staying far away from boat zone! I noticed the boat drivers are giving the kayakers a wave to show they've seen them now. Katharine Collins and I are going to try to patch the kayak together soon. She has a plastic repair kit. The boat driver did come by the trailer yesterday morning to apologize and offer some kind of compensation. As Charley says the best compensation would be safer boat practices and definitely the use of a spotter everyday. Thanks again what a great community we have here.
