I have always taken a taxi to Melaque, then the 5 hr. Primera Plus bus ride to Guadalajara, where I stay at La Serena, the hotel next door to the Guadalajara bus station. It's not wonderful, but it's is so close to the station that I can wheel my luggage there myself, though a bus station porter could probably take it on a dolly. It is then possible to leave the next morning on the 5 1/2 Primera Plus bus ride to San Miguel, but the buses all stop in Leon, so I prefer to buy a ticket there. The trip to Leon only takes 3 1/2 hours and ends smack dab in the middle of the leather district, which is the biggest center for shoes and purses in this hemisphere, if not the world. I shop, have lunch, and do the remaining 2 hrs. Primera Plus ride to San Miguel, where I arrive early in the evening.
