Some correction of the facts are in order here.
Firstly, the rental agencies in town are not "American Owned". I can think of five, and they are all Mexican owned.
Accomodations are both foreign and locally owned. The more expensive ones are generally foreign owned. You pay for what you get.
The foreign owned are both American and Canadian. Most of those owners have a deep sense of committment and attachment to this town, and contribute in many ways. They are not here for personal financial gain. Nor do they take the money they earn out of the country. I can safely say that nearly 100% of rental income is spent here on staff wages, property maintenance, taxes, and so on.
The US dollar rental charges are an issue. People hit hard by the current exchange rate should, as one poster suggests, ask for a break. There are vacation rentals out there that will give it.
There will come a day when local people have the ability to invest in the local tourism infrastructure. It's a evolutionary process.
