What I read in Daniel's article was that Mexico's reason for restricting the use of the US dollar within the country was that they believed the US dollar was rapidly losing its value worldwide. They didn't want to be holding a devaluing currency in their central bank system.
The question of tourism is interesting. Today, less Canadians will travel to areas of Mexico where they are forced to pay in US doallars. But more Americans will come because they are getting 20-1 on the peso. Just like Canada is seeing a huge spike in Americans crossing its border to spend. Tourists are reconsidering travel plans to the US.
If vacation rentals do not post prices in pesos, they will simply lose business to those that do. It's still a free competitive market here.
