Beth and I are just returning from a month in SE Asia. In Thailand virtually all transactions are in Baht. In Laos the tourism business is done in Kip (local currency) and USD in about equal amounts, but only Kip is available at ATM's. In Cambodia the ATM's offer a choice - USD or the local currency and all the tourist transactions the vast majority of local business is done in USD - with change for fractions of a dollar in the local currency (no US coins).
As to whether (or not) a Canadian will do business in Mexico in USD due to the current exchange rate, it is always a cost-benefit analysis. If the benefit doesn't warrant the cost for the Canadian, then they will look for other places to spend their money - and La Manz remains great value for most aspects for cost of living away from home .... and La Manz remains at a premium for rental costs relative to Melaque and many other places.
