I arrived a week after the hurricane and I immediately noticed a lot of homeless animals. I've heard that some of them showed up as a result of fleeing from somewhere else. I knew it would be impossible for locals to afford to feed them when life was so devastated for people when they'd lost everything. As I am a known dog lover people asked me to help spay animals. Three people chipped in for the first 2 beach dogs who were fed at Figaro's restaurant during the summer. Then another friend told me about 5 dogs that were dumped off at Rudy's. There were 3 females there and 2 males. Pro Animal Melaque provided funding for 4 dogs, so I had the two females spayed. The other female was pregnant and had 5 puppies immediately. Another 5 dogs had been left, so one of those was spayed. Two of that litter died. And the 4th dog was from a low income family and at great risk of gettiing pregnant as she was on the main street of town. Since there wasn't a Cisco's Amigos clinic this year, I felt very strongly that animals would continue to suffer, and with a huge population explosion all the good work that Cisco's did would be undone. So I decided to have a fundraiser to raise funds for a spay and neuter project. A couple of people offered to help me and I invited Lauren who I'd worked well as at eam at Cisco's Amigos. Having a clinic here was hugely problematic without supplies and expertise. The hardest part of this has been being the power struggle and obstruction with one of the people who offered to help me. In retrospect I should have gone it alone like Julie does with Cisco's with the assistance of trusted and friends I'd known for a long time. I feel very proud that I have spayed 51 dogs pretty much on my own. I love the Mexican people and have used to services of the most excellent vet in Melaque, Beto Vigil. And the dogs! And the dozens of wonderful friends who have supported me. I've been in this community for 18 years and it feels so good to help! I am taking 4 extra dogs home with the help of a couple of folks who offered to take them on the plane and I will meet them and bring them to my place for rehoming. I did this for the dogs and they are the ones I feel thanked by. I would like to thank Lauren, Valerie, David Strand, Cathie M for the help with the cats.
I gave a list of 19 more dogs and cats to Lisa and Jeanne that they will have spayed by Rocio, when she comes here at Easter. There will still be 4500 pesos remaining. I will be gone and my hope is that they use this money to spay another 5 dogs through Beto and reimburse Pro Animal Melaque as they help La Manzanilla dogs all year long when they've been hit by a car and need an amputation, have difficult pregnancies and all sorts of emergencies.
