Art & Craft Workshop - Traditional Huichol God's Eye (Ojo de Dios)
Posted by Elena Porten on January 20, 2016, 9:35 pm
Come and learn how to make God's Eye (Ojo de Dios) - a fun, colorful, and easy craft!
Where? Artisanik Pazifico Store (next to the bookstore). When? This Friday, 1/22, from 10am-12pm.
What? God's Eye is a yarn weaving craft as well as a spiritual object. It's an ancient practice for many indigenous communities, including the Huichol Indians from the Sierra Madres & Jalisco State. "The God's Eye is symbolic of the power of seeing and understanding that which is unknown and unknowable, The Mystery. The four points represent the elemental processes: earth, fire, air, and water."
Who? Everyone is welcome to this workshop! Supplies are provided. Natalia, from Mexico City and her partner, Juancho, from Argentina, will be leading this workshop.
Time/Cost/Location: Natalia and Juancho are leading two, 2-hour workshops. The first day is Friday from 10am-12pm. During this time you'll get a brief history/background of the craft and then will be provided with the materials to make your own God's Eye. If you're hooked, come back on Saturday (same time, 10am-12pm) to get into more detailed/complicated designs, where you can start to make Mandelas or even earrings. The workshop costs $180 pesos for one day (roughly $11 ), or $300 pesos for both Friday and Saturday. All supplies (wood and colorful yarn) will be provided.
Again, the workshop is this Friday from 10-12pm at Mabel's store, Artisanik Pazifico Store (across from the fish co-op and next door to the bookstore) - please spread the word!
In order to have an idea of how many people are coming, please stop by Mabel's store - Artisanik tomorrow to sign-up for the workshop. Her hours are 11-2pm and 5-10pm.
