April Fools Day: 2010
Back home my ears ring.
The deafening silence keeps me awake.
No roosters cry through the night
long before dawn.
No dogs bark beneath our balcony.
No breeze in the trees.
No leaves to catch any wind.
No wind.
Only silent raindrops on bare branches.
No chirpy earworm tune—
bee-bop-da-dee-bop
twice over—
the third time ending with a jaunty
two-note climax,
followed by the vowelly voice that calls,
Globallll Gaaaaaaaas!
seven every morning except Sunday.
The bottled-water truck siren bawls.
Children cry and play and fight and frolic
on the sidewalks where their parents
set up instant restaurants—
tacos for lunch, tomales for supper.
The papaya lady sells from her front hall
every other day while the cilantro man
sits on his chair by the veggie stand
pruning his pile into perfect bunches.
I am homesick for Mexico.
