The critter had come right to the edge of the road before turning back into the bush. I was able to watch him for a good five minutes as he appeared to be in no hurry, stopping to scratch and mark a couple of downed trees, snooping about looking for prey I would guess. I was quite curious since this was a new sighting for me. My impression was of about 40 lbs weight and probably between 4 and 5 feet in length w/ tail. Dark grey to black in color, slightly mottled but no visible spots. He or she has been eating well and had a healthy belly, or was perhaps a pregnant female?
A little research gave me the following.
Species: Puma Yagouaroundi
English: Jaguarundi
Spanish: Yagouaroundi
Solitary and Diurnal
Body size: 21 to 30"
Tail: 12 to 24"
Weight: 3.5 to 9.1 kg or 20 lbs
Color: from reddish brown to grey to black.
Another good day in paradise. Rojo1364
