I'm an old friend of Dave's, from Taos, New Mexico, and brought Dave on board to help teach drawing and design to our scholarship students at La Catalina. I'm also the person who co-ordinates the class activities such a printmaking, painting, watercolors, and this year, clay sculpture. I was chair of the Artwalk for the last two years, and thanks to the support of the Artwalk Committee, our class has had splendid successes, including a show at our local gallery where the kids sold nearly 50% of their work. I also manage the finances for the 10-week Catalina Arte Mixta class.
This year, I will be hosting 3 literary events in La Manzanilla. The events will be called "The Spoken Word Artists Charity Series" to help raise money for art supplies for our class, as well as money to be spread around the community to people affected by Hurricane Patricia last year, and other causes.
On January 9 we will have an Open Mic at Casa Luz. On January 16 we will have a StorySlam at Casa Luz (Dave took first place at one of our StorySlams last year). And on February 20 five Spoken Word Artists will share their work, including Denise Brown, a poet and our local drummer, myself, Sam Lennox, a storyteller and sax man, Anne Wheeler, who just received a Life-time Achievement Award from the Canadian film industry, and Alice Walker, the author of The Color Purple and other notable works.
So if you felt like making a donation either through Julie at La Catalina, or directly to me, for supplies for our class, Dave's former class, the 18 students, five teachers, and our translater, certainly would appreciate it, and we could help expand the kid's horizons a bit more.. Thank you, Ron Stock 123
