The election is affecting them in a very powerful way. To ignore that is, in my opinion, very disrespectful to people who have welcomed so many Americanos to La Manzanilla for so many years, with open arms and hearts.
Today, two locals, who have no intention of ever migrating to the U.S., or leaving La Manzanilla, told me they cried today. Their feelings about Americans today is lack of trust, and perplexity. I fear it could turn to downright anger. I cannot honestly say I could blame them.
I tried to explain that more than half of voters did not vote for Trump. They were very confused about why he is President elect if that was the case. It was a challenge to try to explain the Electoral College, given my sparse Spanish skills.
Mexican immigration into the U.S. has been at net zero for several years, and the Mexican middle class has been on the rise. I think NAFTA was probably helpful. And NAFTA is the reason we gringos can more easily acquire more products from the U.S. Maple syrup, for instance. NAFTA is on the chopping block. That does not bode well for the Mexican economy.
