I started by reading some of those links Daniel provided. I learned that the sky was not actually going to fall. What Trump says and what he actually means are not always the same. And, even though he may want to do something, he does have a limited ability to make it happen. The American political system has many checks and balances. Witness Obama's "lame duck" image.
It is one thing to mouth off about forcing industry out of Mexico and back to the U.S., but it is another to force global corporations like Ford to do it. Tear up NAFTA? Ain't going to happen. The Republican controlled Senate supports open trade policies. Trump may have a problem there.
Building a wall, removing birther rights, deporting illegal Mexicans are nasty and racist, and an extreme hardship to many Mexicans, but hardly the stuff to destroy the Mexican economy.
My contingency plan? Do not apologize to every Mexican I talk to for what the American voters have done. They already understand that foreigners in La Manzanilla are not like that. I would ask my Mexican neighbours to wait and see. Governments come and go. Hopefully some go quicker than others. Let's just go on being who we are, doing what we have always done. The community of La Manzanilla is not representative of the rest of the world. Thank God for that.167
