By all means, have someone demonstrate “the shuffle” to you. Your shuffling feet stir up the sand and the stingrays usually flee.
So if you or someone else has the unfortunate experience of a stingray wound, it is a good idea to know how to deal with it. The popular local culture says to put the Raya vine steeped in hot liquid directly on the wound. The Raya vine quite likely has a degree of efficacy for alleviating stingray wound pain. A little research of neurotoxins of the ray variety evidences that the toxin breaks down very rapidly with direct application of heat. That is probably as much the reason that Raya vine tea works as is the associated heat.
You might check out what Wikipedia has to say about this; scroll down to the part about treatment.

If you are on the beach order a cup of hot coffee or tea and pour it directly on the wound, do not wait for someone to brew you a batch of the Raya vine. When I received a stingray cut on my foot, I drained hot water from the valve at the bottom of my hot water heater into a bucket. I stuck my foot into the bucket, and yes it was way far hot. Within one-half hour I had absolutely no pain from the wound or toxin. One guy suggested I shove a lit cigarette directly into the wound. Nah, not for me, I don't smoke.
You probably will never have a problem. With so many people in the water, most of the rays move on.197
