First hand information in the last week regarding the process to Refund the Mexican Tourism Tax embedded in all airfare ticket purchases for WestJet flights outside of Mexico to any Mexican destination. As previously discussed there is a group of individuals that are exempt from this tax and, when flying WestJet here is the up to date refund process. as received via email from this airline.
1. You must apply for this refund prior to your flight to Mexico
2. You will need to scan a copy of your supporting document. As example, your Temporary Resident Visa or Permanent Resident Visa or Mexican passport. For all types of air travellers that are exempt, check with your airline or Mexican Consulate or Embassy.
3. Email from WestJet: "Thank you for emailing Taxexempt@westjet.com and providing WestJet with the requested supporting documentation to support your respective tax exemption. Please note that this email address is not monitored and has been created for the sole purpose of receiving the supporting documentation to support the tax exemption that has been provided to you. Should you be emailing for another purpose, please contact the WestJet call centre for assistance as this email address will not be responded to.
Kind Regards.
WestJet
4. Email reply from my email to Taxexempt@westjet.com with my documentation: "Hi Richard,
Now that we have your documents you do not need to send a copy every time.
You DO still have to call our Contact Center to book and have the exemption applied prior to any flight commencing.
Have a great time!
Kari"
5.Same day tax refund deposit to my CC: " 27 OCT 17 WESTJET AIRLINES 110000 GUEST SCC HD -$32.02"
I do not believe this will work if you have booked a flight with Westjet and their partner AeroMexico. Be sure to ask Westjet Customer Service first and insure that the refund will come from Westjet and not AeroMexico.
Hope this helps with all us Westjeters with existing exempt Visas.
