I have not had personal experience on this but do know that you must have your tourist entry slip upon departure from Mexico. The airline checkin agent will ask for it. If you don't have one you must go to the immigration office at the airport and do some paperwork, as well as pay a fine. Likely the longer your overstay, the bigger the fine. I have heard various fine quotes, but one was 5 dollars per day of overstay.
The bottom line is get to the airport early if you have lost your immigration form. There is often a lineup there of people with various immigration needs. Too long a delay and you could miss your flight.
