Dog Food

It's almost time to head for La Manz again. With December already above 350 mm (almost 14 inches)of rain here, I'm ready. I have a new Standard Poodle I will be bringing with me. He's been eating a premium dog food that I know is not available in Mexico. I'm switching him to Costco dog food as it appears it is available. I know lots of gringos bring their dogs with them to La Manz. I'm interested in what you are feeding your dogs and if anyone is buying Costco dog food down there. | ------------------------Re: Dog Food

I make my dogs home-made food. I cook a chicken and put aside some for me and some for them. I cook lentils, rice, carrots, sweet potato and put it in the mix. I wish I had a slow cooker! I did get a bag of Rice and Lamb dogfood from Costco in Puerto Vallarta when a friend went up there, but my dogs would rather have the home-made. Problem is I was feeding the Chihuahua/Maltese too much and she was looking like a gordita! So now she gets mostly dry as it's good for her teeth and I can measure it. For the big dog, I have to hide the dry food in with the home-made. If I give him dry food only he refuses it and it will sit there all day! | ------------------------Re: Dog Food

Costco Dog Food might be a bit hard to get. The nearest Costco to La Manzanilla is in Puerto Vallarta, 200 km and about 4 hours by car north of here. Many of us who don´t cook our own dog food like Norma buy Mar´s America Pedigree. It is not a ¨Premium¨ dog food but, unless you have special health considerations that require a specialty food, it seems to do the trick. It is available by the kilo in almost every abarrotes (ma and pa grocery store). Prices vary a lot as does the freshness of the food. We pay $33 pesos a kilo from Yerina on María Asunción just before the school. That´s a good price and she sells a lot of it, so it is fresh. Veterinarians carry some of the pricier dog foods, usually only in smaller bags. They can run three or four times as much per kilo as Pedigree or even more. There is a Walmart in Manzanillo, about an hour drive south of La Manz. They carry a small variety of brands. You might find something that strikes you or your pocketbook as being ¨Premium¨ there. Google Pedigree and you will find a lot of information about it. | ------------------------Re: Dog Food

We bought Royal Canin dog food (made in the US) for our Papillon from the vet in Melaque. Granted it's for small breeds but assume they would have the same brand for large dogs. | ------------------------Re: Dog Food

CARNE FRESCA FORCE, is the food I bought from Dr Betos, veterinary in Melaque. I have a border Collie with a sensitive digestion, and this is what he recommended. Don't recall the price as the total paid was a mixture of food, services and medication.

I feed my dog a mixture of the premium (pricey) dry food that I buy at Beto's Vet store in Melaque with home made rice and chicken or ground beef. (Which costs a lot less than dog food and is probably a lot healthier.) | ------------------------Re: Dog Food

We buy all dog food (same as in Ca) at Wal Mart in Manzanillo. They have a great selection actually. Costco in PV is the closest I believe. Good luck... Hasta...D | ------------------------
