It used to be that 90% of the puppies around here died before they were 6 months old from either parvo, distemper or the complications from mange. I remember people telling me that their dog was very old when I would explain why it's a good idea to spay and neuter. "So how old is your dog?" I would ask. Their answer was usually less than 1 year.
With the lack of money or "energy" to get their puppies to the vet for their shots most of these sweet little things do die. Just within the past 2 weeks of talking to people about the upcoming clinic I have been told of at least 3 litters of 9 puppies. Puppies are everywhere and they don't last long. It's a sad scenario, but the truth.
We are lucky here in La Manzanilla that not too often puppies or kittens are found in the trash. ProAnimal in Melaque does a very good job of saving these little guys and finding homes for them.
Here we have a problem with the older dogs that are being dumped or eventually wonder away from a home that doesn't care anymore. These older dogs are very hard to find homes for. They are just not cute puppies/ kittens that you can take to the markets and find homes for them.
There is no easy solution. Spaying and Neutering has a huge impact on the problem. The HSUS tells us that for every unsterilized 2 cats in 7 years there could be 20,000 kittens born. For every 2 dogs there could be 7,000 puppies born. The numbers are staggering if you do the numbers. Cisco's Amigos has done almost 5000 animals. ProAnimal did 1,000 last year. Alianza in Santiago did 1500 last year.
All of us are making a huge difference on the Costa Alegre with our spay and neuter programs.
Thank you for supporting all of these programs.
