I think I know which ones Judy's referring to and know that these are not 'dangerous' dogs. They have just gotten into the habit of rushing and barking at people, particularly vendors or those who present a large or bulky profile against the sun.
I make it a practice to discipline these dogs; I run toward them, hollering the name of the one I know, and swinging whatever I have in my hand. Occasionally, I will deliver a whack if it's my cloth bag or backpack.
First, I can understand why people find this offensive; secondly, my dog is one of the tag-alongs, and I don't want her adopting these unpleasant 'tricks'.
I've used the water spray here on my short street when my dog barks at people coming along and have found it to be quite successful.
Now, I'm not suggesting that everyone trot around with spray bottle at the ready, but, if some of the other dog owners who hang out down there would make use of my spray bottle, perhaps we can curb this distasteful behaviour before something terrible happens.
Dog owners?
