Q: When is a good time to recycle? A: Anytime, All the time!
Hola to all La Manzanilla Message Board readers,
Here’s the latest on the La Manzanilla recycling project. While the Primary students were out on summer recess things slowed down a bit. Now that school is in session again, “Las Hormigas” – the first recycling site in all the municipality of La Huerta – is up and running! Thanks to the leadership from the wonderful Director, José Francisco Mendoza Contreras, a newly formed parent committee, and support from La Manzanilla Hermosa.
Las Hormigas, located behind the Primary School on Playa Dorado, is open 24/7 to receive approved materials (you can find the list below). There are new signs to help you sort, (thank you Lety!). The new covered structure (built with generous community donations) will keep cardboard and paper dry and recyclable.
After the newly elected government administration is settled in La Huerta, we hope to resume convenient curbside recycling. We will keep you informed here and on Facebook.
Here is a list of accepted materials and non recyclable materials. This list has been confirmed with the buyer, Recicladora Tenacatita, in Aguas Calientes Viejo.
RECYCLABLE
Mixed Plastic: all plastic that contained water, soda, milk, juice, or cleaning products
Hard Plastic: plastic chairs, crates, and buckets, plastic bottle caps
Cardboard and mixed paper: cardboard, paperboard, books, magazines, paper towel rolls, etc.
Aluminum cans
Mixed metal (Chatarra) (SEPARATE from aluminum): tin, bottle caps, pet food cans, etc.
Batteries - car, household
Glass: ONLY accept clear or transparent glass. No brown, green, or blue. Glass is not included in curbside pick up.
NON RECYCLABLE:
Plastic bottles used for cooking oil Large “Garrafon” water bottles Plastic bags of any shape or size!! Styrofoam Aluminum foil Egg cartons/crates Waxy containers, "Tetrapaks" (Jumex, coconut milk, almond milk, juice boxes) Boxed wine Colored glass
We started a regular “Volunteer Day” on Wednesdays, beginning at 8 am. Please come by when you have a few minutes to help sort and clean up.
Thank you to everyone who has been helping to make Las Hormigas happen. The engineers from La Huerta and Autlán, the garbage men, the Primaria students, the teachers and staff, as well as all volunteers and donors. We would not be where we are without you!
La Manzanilla Hermosa is a small group dedicated to putting into action the 3 R’s, (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Other projects starting up for high season include reducing the use of plastic carry bags at the grocery stores, reducing the quantity of plastic bottles sold, and encouraging reusable and/or biodegradable take-out containers. More news on these projects will follow under separate headings.
