The State of Jalisco recently passed a law to phase out single-use plastic and Styrofoam!
Here are some simple ways you can help promote this new habit during your stay in La Manzanilla:
* Remember to bring your own reusable bags when shopping
* Talk to your friends and neighbors about using reusable carry bags instead of single-use plastic
* Pack a few extra reusable cloth bags in your luggage to share with friends and neighbors
Many of the local businesses in La Manzanilla are embracing this change, and the 3 largest grocery stores – (Lidia’s, CostaLinda, and Alejandra’s at the crucero) have all posted signs to inform shoppers of the new rules. Those not bringing their own bag, or purchasing one at the store, will be charged 3 pesos for the single-use "camiseta" type carry bags.
While work continues on the recycling project, reducing our dependence on single-use plastic is the best way to keep this dangerous material out of the waste stream, and out of our beautiful bay.

Great news, Lisa, finally, we will think twice about expecting a single use plastic bag with every little purchase. We are joining so many other parts of the world who have taken this step - like Kenya, where single use bags have been illegal for a few years.
