It is ironic that the main argument for the new sewage system(there were at least two other system attempts in the past) was that it would prevent sewage from entering the lagoon/ocean. They were saying that the septic systems do eventually leach into the ocean underground. In my opinion at least the sewage got filtered through many meters of soil before going into the low point, being the ocean or lagoon.
Since the "new" sewage system got put in, the lagoon was used as the backup for dumping affluent when there was a problem and there have been many problems from the onset. One problem being that at the height of the rainy season the pumps and the pipes can't compete with nature's overwhelming deluges. Besides the manholes, being very porous, and the leaks in connections, the pipe going to the treatment plant is only 4", the pumps and pipes can't deal with the rainwater and sewage combined.
These problems are overwhelming but could be fixed with money. How much? I have no idea. I have to say though that before the connections to the system were made there was only the usual annual or semi annual natural out flow from the lagoon and river which only had the organic material buildup that nature made like rotten debris, croc poo, etc in it and it smelled bad as well and was brown in color but didn't have the scary stuff like human waste.
About the crushed 4" pipe at the highway- I wonder if there is a way to go under a bridge or through some culvert to install a new pipe, maybe this time make it 8"or maybe even bigger. I imagine tearing up the highway surface would be a big deal with federal and local gov'ts. So why not explore other ways to go around or under the road. I haven't done the walking myself(can't do it anyway) but just thinking of ideas. And install bigger pumps too. I know what the problem is, it is all engineering and money and where do you find it?
We all know that the lagoon will close itself and the ocean will clear up to it's beautiful clean, clear state. Meanwhile work on solutions.
