I went to the Central de Salud to see what I could find out. I was greeted by the very articulate Dr. Haim, who speaks English very well. The facility itself is a beautiful space, with a room with two hospital beds, one for women's examinations, a consultorio, and a pharmacy. Dr. Haim estimates that he sees at least ten patients every morning. I was impressed.
Now the sad part--there has been no water at the facility for the last two months. Dr. Haim lives there at the facility, so things have been difficult for him, and he felt it was almost impossible to do his job. When the delagado found out that there was no water, he personally put a temporary fix on the problem so that the center had water the very next day! Bravo, Francisco! He is working on a more permanent solution, which includes a new line from the water main and a new pump.
The Director of Hospitals from La Huerta is working to improve other aspects of the center--more equipment and more medications being at the top of the list.
One need that I hope someone can fill is this: We are expecting a new doctor to work the center within the next few weeks. That doctor has no bed. Apparently there is a single-sized mattress there, but there is no base for the mattress--the wooden part of the bed. If anyone has one that they're not using that they would like to donate to the center, please let me know.
