Beach erosion . .

Our beach is in it's usual rough condition after the wet season and the recent storms, no great news. What is alarming and should be stopped at all costs are the businesses along the beach hauling off materials in trucks and dumping said materials elsewhere. Rocks and sand both. I understand they want a pretty beach for their customers and are trying to "help". However, they are not helping anyone in the long term let alone helping their business. All of the rocks and "extra" materials besides sand on the beach are not imported or alien materials at all. The rocks used to be in the trench that opens up every year just off shore during the wet season. The rocks are moved by the scouring action of the larger waves and given enough time would return of their own accord to the void of the trench. Unfortunately natures time table and the tourist season don't always co-ordinate schedules and every year I watch backhoes load multiple dump trucks and haul away the "debris". Very short sighted and ill conceived. Additionally, the sand we need for our beach is also moved off shore during the storms. The shallow area off shore past the trench extends for quite a ways into the bay and is the repository of the beach sand "missing" in action. If nature was given enough time she would pull most all of the rocks back into place and then slowly replace the sand until we get our favorite and pretty beach everyone enjoys. The beach is a delicately balanced eco-system which is very easy to destroy. Take a look at Barra if you doubt the danger. Hauling off materials to make the beach pretty are only going to hasten it's disappearance. Building closer and closer to the surf with hardened surfaces like the new Mirador's don't help either. I can only hope someone is paying attention who is in a position to inject some common sense into the conversation soon. Rojo | -----------------Re: Beach erosion . .

I agree. Chalk this up with other decisions that have been made over the years, i.e. cutting a road above Calle Concha Molida to open up new lots on the mountain then letting said road erode putting in danger homes below building the ill conceived temp lagoon road "bridge" when a real bridge should be built not properly building and maintaining the sewer system not fixing and maintaining the water holding tank on the mountain that use to feed the whole northern section of the town, now we have water shortages just to name a few!! Removing material from the beach is generally a big problem. I am not sure, but maybe a federal offense. Another method to deal with the rock on the beach has been for the backhoe to return the rock to the sea at low tide. I have seen this for many years.

I think pushing them back into the ocean is the way to go. We did it on the beach for the past 15 years. Never do it before December. If you do, they just come back. One year we were told that we were not allowed to do this. So, I had them dig a big hole on the beach and deposit the rocks in it. Worked like a charm. But don,t do it until December. They all come back the next year but that is OK, I was not removing them just hiding them for the season. Taking them away would be a mistake. My opinion. | -----------------Re: Beach erosion . .

I agree. Living here year-round for 10 years, I am of the opinion that rocks thrown on the beach from the trench are critical to keeping Summer storms from destroying buildings on the beach. Swimming is more challenging when there is a trench. But it is probably a small price to pay. | -----------------Re: Beach erosion . .

Why don't they leave the rocks on the beach, Mother Nature will take care of them. We will get used to them. | -----------------Re: Beach erosion . .

They do it because this is one of the best beaches for families on vacation, and the trench formed by Summer storms makes it very hard for people who go into the water (especially when coming back to the beach). And, rocks are not friendly for people to sit. Often, high tides do return much of the rocks back to the trench, and sand covers them until the next Summer storms. But usually not all, so machinery is brought in to assist the natural process after the hurricane season. Most rocks are pushed back to the trench, but they do move some elsewhere. Not sure why they move them, and whether they move so much that it might ultimately cause harm to the beach.
