Boric Acid for ants

This is the first year I'm very successfully using boric acid for ant control - it's an ongoing process. I bought a kilo of the powder on Mercado Libre, cost $200 pesos with shipping DHL to the door. That's probably I use the caps from the putified water garafones with a ratio of approximately 1 boric acid to 5 sugars (I've read recipes using 3-10 times the amount of sugar). I DON'T ADD ANY WATER. I tried in the past adding water to the mix, but found this works way better. Might take a few minutes for the ants to find it, but they will and hopefully will take it back to their nest where it will ultimately kill the queen. All my trees have lots of ants going up and down. Not so good for the fruit trees. I put one of those at the base of the tree, where usually there's a nest. Depending on the number of ants, the mi.x can be gone in as little as a day. If it's in a humid place you can cover it with a can, otherwise with the humidity it can get hard. Good luck! | -----------------Re: Boric Acid for ants

I've gotten it an the farmacia in Melaque (tried ferreterias and farmacias in Miguel Hidalgo & Agua Caliente, no luck) but only in tiny packages. | -----------------Re: Boric Acid for ants

I bought it at the ferreteria here in La Manzanilla. It's about 3 lbs. There are warnings online about it harming plants so I don't put it directly on them. | -----------------Re: Boric Acid for ants

Do you use powdered or granular sugar? | -----------------Re: Boric Acid for ants

My experience here is that the ants have a damaging effect on my fruit trees. I put tape around the trunk and coat it with grease to keep them from going up. Works until enough get stuck that others start crawling over them. Regular sugar (granulated). | -----------------Re: Boric Acid for ants

I'm currently battling leaf cutter ants by the thousands, but I don't want to kill them. I found they hate Cayenne pepper. I have a lot of the powder and it really does a good job of deterring them, but not killing them. Maybe a thick line around the base of a tree? It's working for me so far.
