Something biting/stinging in the sea?
Posted by Jan on January 7, 2019, 8:11 am
I swam fairly far out yesterday morning where there was small bubbles breaking on the surface though I couldn't see anything associated with that activity. I felt some prickliness at the time...nothing serious but later in the day I noticed dime sized itchy welts under my arms along the edge of my bathing suit. This morning the welts continue to itch and are hard. Does anyone have any ideas what causes this? I had the same experience swimming in the area two years ago.

Jellyfish is my guess! I have a welt under my arm from swimming on Friday. | -----------------Re: Something biting/stinging in the sea?

There are dime size or smaller nearly invisable clear to blue colored jellies out there. I don't think everyone reacts to them the same way. For example, I can swim with a group of people and will be the only person stung. The stings itch for a few days but sometimes turn into welts. When i first get stung I put vinigar or lime juice on. Then I use a cortisone cream on them. Good luck. | -----------------Re: Something biting/stinging in the sea?

It is sea lice . You need to get a swimming shirt if you are going to spend time here . They seem to hit the women worst because they get trapped in the bathing suit . take some Benadryl go to the drug store and get some stuff called fast aid it will relieve the itch for awhile keep applying it through out the day it will clear up in a few days . | -----------------Re: Something biting/stinging in the sea?

Yes, sounds like sea lice. The only thing that works for me is taking antihistamines. The blisters can easily last a week or so. Really annoying. | -----------------Re: Something biting/stinging in the sea?

When I got them, the itching was intense. Putting hot as you can stand it wet cloth on the welts, stops the itch for hours. Even in the middle of the night, do it again. | -----------------Re: Something biting/stinging in the sea?

Safe Sea brand lotion (photo attached) is somewhat effective against stings, but not always. Adult and kid fomula. Got from Amazon U.S. Buy MX might have it. Mags

You folks have terrific information and suggestions. Thanks everyone. I'm pretty sure I'm only going to swim when the water's a bit rough from now on....that seems to keep the sea lice away. At least, I was only afflicted in relatively calm, water early morning. | -----------------
