Lyle and I crossed the border yesterday in Nogales. After leaving La Manz we stayed a couple of days in Ajijic, so we started from there, getting to the hwy 15 (cuota) in Guadalajara. We stayed on the 15 all the way.
The road is great, the works are almost done, the only part where there are still works being done is north of Sinaloa, south of Sonora, after Mazatlan, for a couple hundred kms. Then a few bits and pieces north of Sonora, but almost nothing. I imagine the hwy will be all done next season!
We did not had any problems at the tolls and we never felt threatened or afraid. Yes, there are some tolls that are not working and there are people protesting. In one they asked for 50 pesos and in another they asked 100 pesos, with no margin for negotiation, but always in a nice way, with smiles on their faces. We did not see sticks or anything aggressive. And we were happy to give a little money in all the tolls with protesters, in fact we payed much less than if the toll was working, so it was a good deal! :-)
The only scary thing on the road was when we got to the km 21 before Nogales, to collect our 300 dollars... now they put a barrier dividing the hwy, so you can't just turn around with your car to go to the bank on the other side. The Mexican federals left 2 little gaps for you to cross the hwy on foot!!! Yes, that was scary!
Happy travels and don't be afraid, just come with a smile on your face!
