House Sitter Question
Posted by Broman on April 29, 2019, 6:24 am
I have recently begun house sitting in really beautiful home with an ocean view and swimming pool. I have access to WiFi, a TV with Shaw service, a stocked pantry and a freezer full of frozen fish. It's all so very, very nice. However, I understand that, in addition to free rent, some house sitters get paid a monthly stipend. A few extra pesos would certainly come in handy, but I not quite sure how to handle my situation. Query: Should I inform the owner(s) that I am living here and ask for a reasonable wage, or should I just let sleeping dogs lie? | -------------------Re: House Sitter Question

Nice to see you are back amongst us, Broman! Is there any animal care involved with your housesitting position? If so, I think asking for some compensation is most appropriate. Paying 300-500p a day for the feeding of pets seems fair, no? If no pets, and it is just housesitting, I'd say the free rent, with ocean view and afore mentioned benefits is compensation enough, UNLESS you are also being asked to water large gardens, maintain sewage system, clean the swimming pool, stuff like that (you know, work for gardeners, plumbers and pool boys). Then I'd say some compensation for such is indeed reasonable. Hope I've helped. Judy, an admirer of Broman's dilemmas. | -------------------Re: House Sitter Question

Hmmm, I don't know what your original arrangement was or with whom you made it, but it sort of seems like you've made your bed. I've had house sitters suddenly change the game rules on me (my home is in Canada), and it's been hell trying to re-organize from a distance. I agree with Judy that, if the expectation is that you are to perform the duties that are usually hired out, then, yes, compensation for the "over and above". But, Broman, you're got all that AND a ton of free food! I'd say you've hit the jackpot. Gotta feed a dog or cat and water a few patio plants? -- just do it. And enjoy your beautiful space. | -------------------Re: House Sitter Question

Inform the owner that you are living there? Generally when I have a house sitter I already know that. L | -------------------Re: House Sitter Question
