Thanks for the replies. But seriously, I'm planning to move there this year from the Lake Chapala area and would appreciate knowing how often and how deep. | -------------------Re: Is the Popa' Catholic?

This thread does not represent the type of people who are the majority of the folks who live here. Always a few bad apples. Anyway, please don't let it put you off of asking questions about where you are about to make your home. No, it doesn't flood, often big puddles though, after a big rain. | -------------------Re: flooding

Ankle deep for a few hours during a heavy rain I call that flooding. | -------------------Re: Is the Popa' Catholic?

Jeez, Paco, is this really necessary? You might want to keep your "sorry ass" mouth shut once in a while. There, Paco, did that feel good? Probably not, probably kind of like Ellie felt with your response to her perfectly reasonable query. | -------------------Re: Is the Popa' Catholic?

Paco Please don't forget you are a guest in La Manzanilla. You give this lovely little Mexican village a real smear when you represent it with your negative and rude potty mouth. Have some respect. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

There's always a chance of flooding.....heavy rains, hurricanes, luck of the draw what each season has in store for us! | -------------------Re: Flooding?

Keep in mind that La Manzanilla is primarily built on sand, which absorbs rainwater rather quickly. So, to my knowledge, we don't have the kind of flooding that sweeps away vehicles, animals, and children. The roads might be a mess for a while, but you can usually wade through them. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

One of your residents wrote a friendly, informative email yesterday, assuring me that most of the residents are some of the nicest people he's met and that the smartass comments were the exception. I'm not moving to the coast by choice: it's a health problem requiring that I live at a lower level and La Manzanilla sounds like a good fit for us. I hope no one is annoyed by my questions. Thanks for the answers so far. Sounds like the flooding isn't any worse than happens to some of the streets where I'm living now. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

The water shed that La Manzanilla sits at the bottom of isn’t very big so while there are times a lot of water flows through town it doesn’t last long. I have only seen a couple of building negatively impacted. Of more concern is some of the roads washout. One can be landlocked by impassable streets if one is driving. These situations tend to be resolves in a few days and are happening less frequently as more streets are paved. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

Thanks, Neal. Since I'm going to avoid property with stairs, we'll probably be looking on the flats where there's paving. Maybe lay in a supply of sand bags. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

One thing you should know is that it's very hot and humid in the summer. Some people go to the Chapala area (or to the US, Canada, or inland Mexico) to escape the worst months which are usually August - October, but can be July too. If it rains a little, everything gets very steamy - kinda feels like you're living in a sauna. If it rains a lot, it's refreshing and a bit cooler. I recommend people spend one summer before making a commitment. Just my humble opinion. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

I know about the heat and humidity along the Pacific Coast, which is the reason we didn't move there in the first place. We're from coastal CA; the Monterey Bay area: much cooler. This move is going to take some adapting, but it's a health issue. The Lake Chapala area has a just about ideal climate except that its 5000 ft. elevation is not good for people with breathing problems. We are expecting to have some solar panels, some A/C and some painful CFE bills. | -------------------Monterey Bay

Hey Ellie, where are you ? Nancy and I live on Coast Rd. about halfway between Santa Cruz and Davenport - maybe we are neighbors. We also have a place in LaManz. | -------------------Re: Monterey Bay

Maybe "were" neighbors. We last lived in Soquel, but before that..various Northern CA places. I miss it.

Actually, the flat, paved roads tend to drain and dry up last because the water can't flow downhill or be quickly absorbed by the sand. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

That makes sense, and I kind of figured it would be like that. Guess there will be times to stay home or get some wading boots.9997428 | -------------------Re: Flooding?

It’s really not that bad. Generally you should be able to avoid the areas that are flood. They don’t stay flooded for long. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

You can also wade in flip-flops! I'm either a pedestrian or a cyclist and I have no trouble getting around without any additional "accessories," except for a big umbrella and a lightweight poncho. | -------------------Re: Flooding?

Yeah, flip flops are great until one get's away and floats on down the street with you splashing along in hot pursuit! Voice of experience. Rojo | -------------------
