Environmental Education at Primary School
Posted by LisaFern La Manzanilla Hermosa on May 20, 2019, 5:56 pm
Starting this week a new environmental education course will be offered for all students in grades one through six at the La Manzanilla Primary School! This is part of an ongoing focus on environmental education that all students participate in, including helping to sort at the Las Hormigas recycle site located on school property. The Primaria, under direction of current superintendent, Jose Francisco Mendoza Contreras, and with active support by the teachers have made care of the environment a priority. Gerardo Martinez, a local marine biology student will be offering weekly classroom lessons, hands-on activities, and a field trip to raise awareness about the flora and fauna of the local ecosystem and why conservation is important. This course will complement the afterschool program he has taught the past two years for older youth through the La Catalina Foundation. Funding for this project is being generated by the sale of recyclable materials from the Las Hormigas site, as well as matching donations to La Manzanilla Hermosa. Wonderful plan, Lisa! What recyclable materials are being offered at the Las Hormiga site? I would also love to contribute financially but will hand cash over at your office rather than the web based alternative. Please keep up the great work you are doing fir this community!

Thanks for the shout out Valerie! I will PM you on donation. The first step in making a change in behavior is raising awareness, so we are excited about Gerardo's classes. On the recycle front there are still kinks in the program that will need working out. Currently Saturday is recycle day and folks should put those materials next to their trash cans. The buyer accepts most plastic bottles, containers, and cardboard (not waxed). (A complete list is on the La Manzanilla Hermosa FB page). Stay tuned for more recycle updates as the system evolves.
