In a way this reminds me of an experience I had years ago in remote northern Guatemala. I was on the road from Coban to Sacapulas in the back of a crowded truck when a young Guatemalan said to me in perfect english "aren't you scared? You're just a big fat target." I can think of many reasons why good folks in a poor country could rationalize defrauding wealthy foreigners living high off of their poverty. | -------------------Re: Americans’ Life Savings Disappear From Mexican Bank Accounts

Those are some broad generalizations. The article is about Monex, one agent (Zavala) and a couple of accounts. Not time to light hair on fire, yet. But do keep an eye on your statements. I get an email everytime money is deducted from my bank account or moved via Intercam. | -------------------Re: Americans’ Life Savings Disappear From Mexican Bank Accounts

Yes, this generalization doesn't apply to the Monex situation because the Zavalas are among the wealthiest families in San Miguel. If the accusations are true, it appears that the people behind this scheme are defrauding members of their own class. And yes, it's a good idea to sign up for automatic email notifications of all your bank transactions, even if you don't have a Mexican investment account. | -------------------mega ditto.

Intercam always gave me the feeling it would become a Monex experience. As a trial after building our home, I transferred the last few thousand pesos to an investment account. I was patient with their excuses for no access online, and never received a statement. After almost 2 years when I closed the account I had paid to wharehouse my funds.
